Native Americans of the southwest have been making beads and incorporating red coral into their jewelry for over 600 years. It comes from the Mediterranean Sea and was brought to the Americas by the early Europeans. Red coral is said to protect us from illness as its deep red color represents blood, our life source.
I've designed two scarves to honor this now scarce stone and its significance in our southwestern culture. In addition to the red coral colors, I've added touches of blue, representing the clear sky and clean water, and the zia symbol honoring the four directions.
